THE WELL-KNOWN BEACH OF VAI
One of the most popular attractions of Crete is the Palm forest of Vai or briefly Vai (the name that has prevailed) and is among the most beautiful locations in the Mediterranean.
It is located 94 km northeast of Agios Nicolaos and 24 km east of Sitia. The name comes from the word palms or palm, vaya in Greek (= palm and branches of palm). The Palm forest of Vai extends to approximately 600 acres and has 5,000 old trees. According to tradition, all these palms grew when the Arab pirates threw the cores from the dates they ate to the desolate land of eastern Crete.
At the heart of the Palm forest of Vai, where the vegetation is denser, there is a fence and the entrance to it is allowed daily from the sunrise to sunset. The forest is located at the end of a valley leading to the beach while inside there is a small spring of clean water and a small creek with oleanders that embrace it.

Sitia is connected with the Dodecanese and the Aegean islands by boat. It has had an airport since 1984 within ten-minute distance from the city center and it provides flights to Athens, Alexandroupoli, Aktio (Preveza), Kassos, Karpathos and Rhodes. Having Sitia as our base we can visit the archaeological sites of Palaikastro, Zakros and Praisos and get to know the historical monastery of Toplou and go swimming in Vai, a beautiful tropical landscape.
